Vila Real de Santo António city, located in Algarve, has the enormous pleasure, proud and honor by receiving the European Champion Clubs Cup, happening on May 29 and 30, at the city sports complex facilities. Therefore, I present on behalf of the city the welcoming to clubs and athletes, as well as to all sports fans.

Vila Real de Santo António owns a strong relation with sports, which is demonstrated by the population enthusiasm and the recognition that sports is and should remain being a touristic pivot of the city.

Over the years, a lot of investments have been made at the sports complex, allowing innumerous national teams and athletes to pick us for training and sportive activities, recognizing this way the high quality of our equipments, our localization, the local weather and our culture.

Yet, our work doesn’t end here. We always want to present better conditions and for that same reason we are finalizing a significant investment analyses at the sports complex that will ensure the continuity, for many years, of the high quality of Vila Real de Santo António sports complex.

I’m sure that we own the necessary conditions that allied with the excellent event organization, will make it a sportive success, contributing to make Vila Real de Santo António a part of the heart and mind of everyone that currently visits us.

As President of the Board of Sporting Clube de Portugal, this edition of the European Champions Clubs’ Cup, which will be held in Portugal, brings a particular sense of pride.

I wish to welcome the participants and also the organisation and I hope that each is very successful and satisfies their objectives, namely the promotion of the prestige and popularity of athletics.

Sporting Clube de Portugal can be very proud of its history in the field, with the club being the source of numerous successes on the global level, particularly in Olympic Games, thus playing a part in the upholding of only the highest values of athletics and of the club alike.

Athletics is a field that acts as a reference in the training of every athlete and of every human being, it drives memorable moments and it is not too much to ask that is should be protected.

I wish to once again reiterate my welcome and wishes of success to all!

The European Champion Clubs Cup has a rich history stretching back to the 1970s and in 2010 we see the honour of hosting the Track & Field Senior Group A passed to Vila Real de Santo António in Portugal through 29-30 May 2010.

It was 10 years ago in 2000 that the five events that comprise the European Champion Clubs Cup were integrated into the European Athletics structure and began to receive a subvention to assist with the administration and hosting of the competitions.

Under harmonised competition regulations, the five different competitions – Women, Men, Juniors Men & Women, Cross Country Women, Cross Country Men – operate with their own authority.

I am confident that the Algarve Athletics Association will produce an excellent event in May with the Technical support of the Portuguese Athletics Federation. Indeed, Vila Real de Santo António is a fantastic location for the event, with the area committed to sports in terms of both their investment in facilities and the passion of the local athletics fans.

I am sure a welcome as warm as the Algarve sun will be extended to the many athletes, clubs, coaches and fans who attend the European Champion Clubs Cup Group A, and I am confident an enjoyable occasion for all will be experienced.

Someone said that honour is the poetry of duty. And the responsibility that this citation holds, confirms the greatness of yet another challenge launched by the European Athletics Association to the Algarve Athletics Association.

The staging of another ECCC in athletics, group A Male and Female, is an immense honour for us and renovates the affirmation of the image, not only of our sport, but also of the Algarve, whose growth and visibility in sporting activities through the media is growing leaving us very proud.

We are aware that effort and commitment are decisive for the promotion and practise of this sport, each day more and more necessary and long-lasting.

Hundreds of visitors are expected, between athletes, managers, directors and respective companions. We hereby guarantee a warm stay that will enable them to confirm the feeling of freedom that the South of Portugal will not let them go short of, through the distinct options available, from our gastronomy to our culture, under a sun that will allow them moments of pleasure and probably leaves them an unforgettable mark.

Hence our sincere wishes for a relaxing stay along with a sporting celebration.

Finally we have the obligation of thanking Portugal’s Sporting Club, Vila Real de Santo António’s  Municipality , Portugal’s Sports Institute and Portuguese Athletics Federation, for their support which, without them we would not have been able to make this event happen.
